Beginning this weekend, legislators across the state are coming home for town halls with their constituents. This is a unique opportunity for you to meet with your representatives and ask them questions face-to-face about where they stand on important issues you care about.

Washington families have waited over a decade for action on paid family and medical leave, and this year is our best chance yet. It’s not too late for the state House to pass House Bill 1116, our paid leave proposal sponsored by Rep. June Robinson, and pass it along to the Senate. But your representatives need to hear from you that you support paid family and medical leave that will protect the health and economic security of Washington workers and families who have a new baby, an ailing parent or an unexpected cancer diagnosis.

Our proposal was designed with input from health experts, small business owners, and community partners. It keeps paid leave affordable for everyone.

So will you attend your local town hall and voice your support? Here are a couple sample questions you can ask:

  1. Right now, too many Washington workers have to choose between having a baby and keeping their job, or taking care of their parent, spouse or another loved one facing serious health emergencies. This isn’t right. Will you fight to prioritize passing a strong paid family and medical leave bill this year?

  2. I’ve done my research and I know the paid leave proposal in the House splits cost between workers and business owners. So I’ll pay about $2, and so will my employer. That sounds great, and keeps costs low for everyone. Do you support that, or do you think one side should pay for the program entirely?

You can read more about our proposal, House Bill 1116 on our website, or email us at info@waworkandfamily.org for more information.
